Australian National Team Coach Ange Postecoglou is adamant that the Socceroos are under no pressure going into their World Cup qualifier against Thailand.
Consecutive draws against Saudi Arabia and Japan saw the Socceroos drop to second place in their World Cup qualifying group while Japan and UAE are breathing down their necks in third and fourth place respectively.
Speaking at the press conference to announce the 23-man squad that will face Thailand in Bangkok on Tuesday 15 November, Postecoglou waved away suggestions the Aussies were burdened by the pressure.
“It’s a good try but no, we are going all right,” he said.
Thailand are bottom of their group and are yet to win a game in this phase of qualifying but Postecoglou said the War Elephants would love to cause an upset against the Socceroos.
“I’m sure they would be thinking that there wouldn’t be a better scalp than the Asian Champions,’ he said. “We’ve just got to make sure we are well prepared for that.
“They have been competitive in their two games so far especially their home games. They are technically a very good side and they are very tidy on the ball.
"Against us they will probably sit a bit off as they do as most teams do now. But they have more about them in terms of keeping the ball and being able to break through the lines.
"We’ve got to be defensively switched on in this game, for them being in this phase it is a fairly big occasion for them and they want to make an impact. “
A draw between Japan and Saudi Arabia would see Australia take top spot should they beat Thailand.
Postecoglou said that could prove a difficult equation for their group opponents in the future.
“If we get three points in Thailand it puts pressure on both those teams,” he said.
“If you look at it both Japan and South Korea who traditionally are two of the strongest are currently sitting in third place in the both the groups. I know once you get into those kinds of positions you’ve really got to win games.
“That’s why it was important for us with these three away games and two home games we had that we get ahead of the curve and don’t start chasing games down the back end.
"With the halfway point if we can get three points the pressure will be on the other teams to get results against one another.”
