Melbourne Victory utility Leigh Broxham says last season’s 2-1 Elimination Final loss to Brisbane Roar will act as extra motivation for Friday night’s season opener.
They travel to Suncorp Stadium which has not been a happy hunting ground for Victory over the years, but look to make amends for a disappointing 2015/16 season.
Despite the upcoming game having no relevance to last season, Broxham admitted the wound was still tender after the lead was snatched with five minutes remaining.
“I suppose as the game gets closer, it gets a bit fresh again, it took a little while to get over the end of the last year and we had to move on quickly because we still had games,” Broxham said.
“When everything was done and dusted, it still hurt a lot and I think we’ll go back there and it’ll re-jog my memory a bit.
“Not that you need more motivation, but it’s there and something you remember and we have moved on as a group and it’s a new group now and we have to go there and try get a result.
“It’s a new group, half the group didn’t live through that, half that did will remember it, when you walk out the stadium it’ll be hard to forget it, but once the first whistle goes, everything goes out of your mind, you’ve got a job to do and things to stick to and that’ll be the main focus.”
Victory have come out of their pre-season unscathed after booking a place in the FFA Cup semi-final with Melbourne City in three weeks.
They have recruited strongly with five new signings including James Troisi and Marco Rojas who return from pursuing opportunities overseas.
And after being strongly tipped to lift the title this season, Broxham was happy with the current state of the team.
“Going through the season you want to win it (championship), that’s what we’re here for and the squad has slowly come together really well,” he said.
“There were a few signings at the start and week after week we’ve been adding to the squad and it’s just been getting stronger and stronger.
“We brought back players who matured and they’ve looked very good. Good experienced players have come in as well, so it’s very exciting and that’s what we’ve got to look to do.”
