Asked about being in talks with Good, Valkanis responded with a firm “no”.

Good, a former City player has struggled to get game time for Championship side Newcastle United is sidelined after injuring himself in a reserves 1-0 loss to Reading last week.

The Newcastle Chronical reported he could return to Melbourne but Valkanis said there was no contact made.

“He’s a player that we know that’s available, been here before,” Valkanis said. “He’s a very good young player at the moment.

“We’ve got a shortlist of players we’re looking at for next season and we’re working through the list accordingly but at the moment there’s nothing further than knowing he’s available.”

City’s clash away to Perth Glory on Sunday will be the last game of the regular season as the visitors are looking to cement third-place.

Brisbane Roar, equal on 39-points with City, one goal behind on goal difference in fourth are also looking to steal third-spot as their game against Wellington Phoenix will begin before the game in the west.

Valkanis feels the prospect of games simultaneously being played in the final round of the A-League season will not happen any time soon.

As done in the English Premier League, the final week of games are played at the same time and former City coach John van’t Schip said last year it could potentially add pressure to other teams knowing results.

However Valkanis understands the factors involved including the broadcasting of games.

“Depending on the result it can put pressure on you on the other way as well or it makes the players relax a bit depending on the result,” Valkanis said. “What we need to do is not focus on what other teams are going to get or where it’s going to be at.

“It’ll be good if we all played at the same time to tell you the truth and you just concentrate on the game itself and on yourself.

“I don’t think it’s (simultaneous games) going to happen here. It’s something we have to live with and just prepare accordingly for ourselves.

“Regardless of knowing the result going into this game, we have to play for our performance, it’s nothing we can change or control. Whether FFA will do it in the future, I don’t know….. It’s not been in our football culture for many years.”

Valkanis also said qualifying for the AFC Asian Champions League (ACL) was a big motivating factor.

“It’s important we finish third and we qualify for that qualifying game in Asia,” he said. “We want to be in Asia next year and if we can lock something in nice and early before finals, then that’s fantastic.

“There is only one game for us at the moment, that’s this one and it’s a grand final for us and we want to qualify for Asia. After that it’s a whole new ball game and different scenario, different proposition going into finals.”
