EXCLUSIVE Representatives of a local gay and lesbian football club are furious Adelaide United’s Antony Golec has apologised to everyone except their community following his homophobic Twitter rant.
Golec’s apology pleaded for forgiveness but made no mention of the hurt his comments have caused to gay and lesbian football fans, players and the community in general.
Heath Wilson, president of Melbourne Rovers SC, a gay and lesbian football club, said their players pay registration fees to the state federation just like everyone else.
Wilson said football was an inclusive sport and Golec and Adelaide United need to understand that.
He added many members of his football buy A-League merchandise and are regular fans at Melbourne Victory games and suggested this could scare away potential fans in the future.
“I have read the story and how he’s apologised to everyone else but the gay and lesbian community,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
“Absolutely I’m disappointed. Because we believe soccer is for everyone."
He also questioned education processes put in place by FFA.
“It doesn’t matter what your sexuality is, your economic background, your ethnic background, soccer is a great sport," he said.
“Those types of inappropriate uses of derogatory language isn’t appropriate in any sport.
“And in terms of the A-League, it may turn off the gay and lesbian community. It also maybe puts questions in people’s minds about whether they want to come play soccer.
“It doesn’t send the right message."
Golec used a string of homosexual and ethnic terms to abuse Williams on Twitter as the referee officiated the fiery match between Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar.
The 21 year old defender - who only last month was part of the wannabe Socceroos training camp in Sydney - let rip on the social media site with a volley of abuse on Saturday.
He later deleted the tweet and then closed his whole account after a backlash from shocked fans and team-mates.
His club issued a statement apologising for the outburst and Golec has since fronted the media to apologise in person.
But his statement only said sorry to Williams, ignoring the offence he caused others by the terms he used, and insisted he was only trying to be funny.
Golec is set to front FFA to explain his actions.
Wilson however applauded the attitude of Golec’s Reds’ teammate Ukranian Evgeniy Levchenko for his subsequent comments on the matter describing the pair as "chalk and cheese".
Melbourne Rovers formed in 2008, as a LGBT football club and play during the winter season for the Yarra Jets in the Metro and State Leagues. The club’s females play in the Women’s State League Div 2 North-West and Metropolitan Central League.
Under Rovers' own banner they also play in the Justin Fashanu Cup, a one-off game to celebrate the life and times of the late former Norwich City striker.
“The two most iconic gay soccer clubs come together to play in memory of the first openly gay top level player to come out back in the 1980s,” Wilson explained.
