The Y-League returned for 2019/20 over the weekend – and goals galore were on the agenda.
Canberra United 1-3 Central Coast Mariners
Making the trip to the nation’s capital to take on United at McKellar Park, the Mariners took the lead after just ten minutes on Sunday morning when forward Michael Katsoulis fired home to give Head Coach Nick Montgomery’s side the advantage.
Though United’s Jordan Host was able to restore the game to equilibrium for Head Coach Ray Junna's - coaching against his former club - crew in the 43rd minute when he netted for the hosts the balance was not long to last: Harry McCarthy restoring the Mariners lead within sixty seconds.
Kyle Johnson then put the cherry on the Mariners’ sundae in the 95th minute of proceedings when he curled a free-kick beyond United’s assembled wall and beyond goalkeeper Sam Brown to make it 3-1.
Perth Glory 0-3 Adelaide United
Sunday was a good day for teams on the road, as the Reds made the trip out west to take on Perth Glory and returned to The City of Churches with all three points.
In the end, the day belonged to Adelaide 2018/19 co-Youth Player of the Year Carlo Armiento, who put the South Australian’s ahead after just five minutes of play at Dorrien Gardens.
Completing his brace with a goal in the 53rd minute, the 20-year-old was then able to secure his hat-trick – the third player to do so in round one – in the games 77th minute before making way for Alexander Popovic – no relation – in the games 89th.
