Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat is struggling to understand the external negativity surrounding the club after getting one point from their opening two games of the season.
Victory were on the verge of defeating Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium a fortnight ago before conceding a goal at the final minute to finish 1-1.
The recent 4-1 loss to crosstown rivals Melbourne City saw the Big V outclassed at Etihad Stadium with fans making their grievances known on social media.
Muscat’s team now travel to Adelaide to take on the Reds at Cooper’s Stadium this weekend - and United have struggles of their own. They squandered a lead against Western Sydney Wanderers in their 2-1 loss at home last week.
“I’m getting annoyed a little bit because at 7.44 (before kick-off v Brisbane) we hadn’t lost a game in pre-season and then we go to Brisbane and concede a goal in the last few seconds and all of a sudden we’re where you’ve just placed us,” Muscat said.
“What’s important is we don’t lose any confidence because it seems like everyone else has, we won’t lose any confidence in ourselves, we know we’re a good team, we know we can perform well and hopefully you’ll see that tomorrow night.
“We’ve all got to take responsibility, we’re going to move on from last week’s game now because what’s vital is we focus on tomorrow night.
“Many things could’ve been done differently last week but me speaking about it again isn’t going to help or get us three late goals equal the game. As I said you’re going to have to trust me, we’ve reviewed it, analysed it, we’ve accepted it and now we move on.”
Victory v Adelaide was is dubbed the “original rivalry" but Muscat refuses to buy into the hype.
And despite the Victory boss taking his typical approach to the game, he said he was excited for the reception at Hindmarsh.
“I think it’s boring (the hype), every week is one of those for us,” he said.
“I enjoy going across to Cooper’s Stadium, the atmosphere is always great, fans are on top here so we generally take quite a few across there as well.
“The games are generally pretty good encounters, so from that perspective hopefully it’s another good footballing contest, but one we come out on the right side of the ledger.”
Muscat won't reveal his side until tomorrow morning with Victory off to South Australia Friday afternoon.
With the departure of young left-back Scott Galloway to Central Coast Mariners, there will be less competition for recognised full-back Daniel Georgievski.
And although versatile veteran Leigh Broxham played leftback against Bentleigh Greens in the FFA Cup quarter-final, Muscat will not play him there on a regular basis.
FC Mainz loanee Maximillian Beister will not arrive in Melbourne until next week, but Muscat said he may be selected for next weekend’s clash against Wellington after being assessed.
“He (Beister) can play anywhere in that front third, in midfield, so it gives us more depth and quality,” Muscat said.
“He’s a good footballer, his last couple of years have stagnated in terms of coming back from (ACL) injury and coming into very good teams, he comes here very motivated wanting to get back on track.”
