Ahead of Saturday night’s Big Blue blockbuster, Sydney FC maestro Milos Ninkovic, says the Sky Blues must put in a 90-minute performance if they are to get the win against Melbourne Victory.
With four wins in a row Sydney FC have made their best start to an A-League season and sit on top of the table. However, the Sky Blues recent results against the Victory tell a different story, with their interstate rivals winning four and drawing five of their last nine games.
Midfielder Ninkovic has been one of the standouts so far this season with two goals and two assists. Nevertheless, the 31-year-old said the Sky Blues need to lift their game against the Victory if they are to get the win.
“I feel we need to play 90 minutes now because we are playing a good team,” he told FourFourTwo.
“It is going to be a tough game and Melbourne Victory is a great team with great players who expect to get a win. But we play at home, the atmosphere is going to be good, the confidence is high and we just need to continue to play like we have the last four games.”
The former Serbian International and World Cup player feels that while the Sky Blues haven’t been at their best during their current winning streak the team is still able to grind out wins.
“This year there are some games where we haven’t played well and we have won and this is very important,” he said.
“Against Wellington we didn’t play like we can, but last year when we played bad we always lost or we drew.
“So we need to play 90 minutes like the first 30 minutes we showed against Newcastle and in the second half against Western Sydney. If we play 90 minutes like we did against those teams we can beat everyone in this league.”
Sydney FC are undefeated in their last eight competitive games and it has Ninkovic believing that this season could be a very successful one for the Sky Blues.
“Yeah I hope so,” he said. “We started great because we’ve worked very hard in preseason we played very well in in some FFA Cup games and in the A-League this season.
“We have signed very good players in Danny Vukovic, Michael, Zullo, Alex Wilkinson, Bobo, Bernie Ibini has come back and Josh Brillante. Alex Brosque has also come back this year and he is a very important player for us and is a key to why we are getting wins.”
Meanwhile Ibini is still fighting his way back to fitness and is buzzing at the opportunity to get some game time in the Big Blue.
“Yes definitely very excited,” he said. “I had a great time last time I was here and during the FFA Cup win and even the time throughout my injury when I was over in Brugge I felt the support from the fans as well.
“So I can’t wait to play in front of them again against Melbourne Victory.”
