The Jets lock horns with Perth Glory in a double-header with the A-League’s F3 derby to follow afterwards.

The Newcastle women played their first two games of the season in Melbourne with a spirited 1-0 loss to reigning champions City in round one, and a subsequent 4-0 thrashing over Victory at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday.

American Oyster came from the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Washington Spirit and began her W-League career with the Jets last season in a sixth-placed finish.

And with her American compatriots Kelsey Wys, Arin Gilliland, Jen Hoy along with returning Matilda Chloe Logarzo, the defender believes they are genuine contenders.

“It felt great winning 4-0, I think it’s a long time coming for this club to be a powerhouse club and we’re showing and proving that now,” Oyster told FourFourTwo.

“We’re getting a bit more experience. Last year was more of a battle against (Victory) and we came out and proved ourselves even more, so I think we have a great future ahead of us.

“We'll be back at Hunter Stadium, so that’s exciting, and hopefully we’ll get recognised for this win and also after we gave Melbourne City a challenge and get some fans down to the game, that would be exciting.”

Oyster scored the first goal of the game in their 4-0 romp over the Victory with a bullet free kick into the bottom corner.

And it was not the first time. Her maiden goal for the Jets last season also came from a free kick in another 4-0 scoreline, that time against Brisbane Roar.

Like many of her peers, she faces a strenuous schedule after finishing the NWSL season but is relishing her second season in the W-League.

“I’ve learnt a lot this year with a new coach back at Washington," Oyster said.

"I was in a different role this year and I learnt a lot from that and going into this W-League season I knew I had even more to learn.

“It’s great to get experience on the field with new players and to learn different way to play, just to get in game minutes, playing against great players in this league, it’s awesome and I think it’ll definitely help me in our future.”
