Wellington General Manager David Dome says Mark Bosnich should focus on knitting rather than comment on Phoenix's place in the A-League.
After Wellington drew 2-2 against Newcastle Jets in December last year, Fox Sports commentator Mark Bonich questioned the New Zealanders existence in Australia’s top flight.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper said Wellington were “offering the A-League nothing at all” after the club was given a lifeline following FFA's threat to axe the Phoenix last season.
But Wellington General Manager fired back at the former Socceroo and said Bosnich should stick to knitting.
“So it’s a little bit like ‘great player Bozza’ but stick to your knitting,” Dome said speaking to Jason Pine on TotalFootball.
“You’re a commentator you should stick to that as opposed to talking about football administration.
“Bozza came out of left field. It wasn’t necessarily thought through. If you look at what the club brings to the A-League, we’ve had two Johnny Warren medal winners.
“We bring in a different angle commercially and financially as well and we have our own connections throughout the world. “
Dome also hit out at FFA for even considering cancelling the Phoenix’s license.
“I always thought it was a little bit of a red herring," he said.
"It would’ve been very short sighted by the FFA to get rid of the club, It wasn’t necessarily thought through.
"They (FFA) saw the reaction that came not just from the fans but the other clubs, the other Chairman and whatever reason their thinking behind not having the Phoenix, it was very quickly overturned."
While Wellington have a ten-year licence, Dome revealed that the Phoenix must reach certain targets in the next four years if they wish to remain in the A-League.
“We have to be around the same as the Jets, the Mariners, and what Perth and Adelaide are doing,” he said.
“We have to be around about the same as the other clubs in the A-League in terms of most often talked metrics such as crowd attendance. We’ve always done that any way and benchmarked ourselves against those clubs.
“There is some stuff in there about TV viewership as well which is a little hard for us to drive but that is also important to us.”
Even though Wellington are five points out of the top six, Dome believes the Phoenix can not only make the finals, but win the A-League Grand Final.
“We’ve always said from the start that we need to be in the playoffs,” he said.
“We have a pretty good history of being in the play-offs in our ten-year history.
"I know no-one has won the A-League outside the top two but there is no reason why you can’t give it a good crack.”
