Marco Rojas has inspired Melbourne Victory to a 2-0 win over bogey team Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park on Saturday.
The Kiwi flyer struck twice in two minutes after a goalless first half. His free kick (52’) forced an own goal from Jets veteran defender Iain Fyfe before Rojas went it alone for the second (54').
A crowd of 18,267 turned up to see the Victory surge into second on the ladder with a game in hand while the Jets languish in 8th.
Injury replacement goalkeeper Matthew Acton was rushed into the starting XII for Victory while the Jets were missing a total of seven players including captain Nigel Boogard.
All White Rojas, returning from national team duty, picked up where he left off with another impressive shift.
But it may have been a different story - Jets debutant Andy Brennan failed to capitalise after the Victory defence were caught sleeping making a meal of his shot on four minutes.
The Victory should have hit the front at the 13th minute as Besart Berisha missed an open goal from a metre out leaving the home fans scratching their heads.
Six minutes into the second half, Wayne Brown’s tackle on Fahid Ben Khalfallah proved costly as Rojas’ free kick took a massive deflection off Fyfe in the wall to pop into the back of the net.
The Kiwi scored just two minutes later after the Jets were punished in defensive midfield.A stunning run into the box had Ben Khalfallah and Berisha to his left but the final decision paid dividends with the Albanian refusing to celebrate.
Victory continued to attack, James Troisi’s screamer on the hour mark was going in only to be tipped over the crossbar by Jack Duncan.
On the other end with 20 minutes remaining, Devante Clut’s shot from long range sent Acton flying to punch the ball out for a corner.
Berisha just could not find the net, and at the 78th minute he weaved his way past defenders only to have his final shot saved and held by Duncan.
Newcastle almost pinched a goal back with two minutes left, a free kick lobbed into the box was punched by Acton, landing to Jason Hoffman whose shot was cleared off the line for a corner by James Donachie.
Victory managed to hang on, rising to second with a game in hand giving the Jets’ fourth loss of the season.
Victory take on Perth Glory next Friday night at AAMI Park while the Jets’ task does not get any easier taking on high-flying Sydney FC next Sunday back at home.
