Griffiths, 32, was linked with a move to Melbourne Victory but thsat's believd to have come to an end with the departure of former coach Jim Magilton and the arrival of new boss Ange Postecoglou.

Yesterday Griffiths arrived for his first training session with Sydney FC but was confined to fitness work on the sidelines and avoided any match action.

But the club admitted coach Ian Crook had been in talks for some time with Griffiths, who is on the hunt for a new club since leaving Chinese side Hangzhou Greentown last year.

The towering 189cm defender could fill the hole in the backline left by Michael Beauchamp's departure and provide back-up in defensive midfield duties as required.

He would also provide a useful addition of experience in an increasingly youthful new-look Sydney side heading into the new season.

Also on trial today was former Gold Coast United keeper Jerrad Tyson who was put through his paces by Sydney FC goalkeeper coach Zeljko Kalac.

Tyson was left without a club following the axeing of Gold Coast after Clive Palmer's stand-off with the FFA, and Sydney are short of a goalkeeper since Liam Reddy was sacked at the end of last season.

Sydney currently have 17 players on their roster and are planning to recruit another four to six before the start of the season.
