The Sky Blues have won their 15th game of the season after beating Melbourne City 3-1 away on Friday night.

O’Neill’s free kick broke the 1-1 deadlock in the 57th minute, scoring his second goal of the season after his first was a similar set piece against Western Sydney Wanderers in Round One.

The 22-year-old said his free kick in the Sydney derby was originally going to be taken by Brosque and it was a similar situation on Friday night with Buijs. He also revealed the skipper and Carney also fancied themselves with set pieces.

“Jordy is a very good free kick taker he can produce a lot of spin and dip in the ball, just the angle that the ball was put and I just thought I fancied me luck again,” O’Neill told FourFourTwo.

“It was quite funny celebrating after the goal. He was like ‘OK, now I understand. You can have them’. It’s good to be able to talk to the lads and have a bit of banter.”

During O’Neill’s interview with FourFourTwo, Buijs cheekily said in the background “Sometimes you take a lot but sometimes you need to give, you know?” with the goalscorer suggesting perhaps Rock, Paper, Scissors may be the only option.

But on a serious note, he was confident in taking free kicks.

“More importantly if you stick your hand up to take it, you got to make it count especially there’s some decent free kick takers in our team,” O'Neill said.

“To be fair I didn’t even look at the wall, all I wanted players either side of it blocking (Thomas) Sorensen’s view. I thought if I can get it up and down quick enough, like the goal I scored in the derby, it’s a chance which is nice to see it go in.”

And with the club potentially being as far as 11 points clear on top of the table after this round, O’Neill said the mindset during the week was to simply win after losing the Sydney Derby last week.

“We didn’t mind if we left and won by a miracle goal in the 94th minute,” he admitted. “That was our main focus this week, to play good football first and foremost but to win.

“To get three points and get back on our winning way and our quest to become champions and I think we’ve done that tonight.

“It was mainly to get reaction from last week, I think everyone was disappointed with last week. We don’t like losing games and we don’t want to make a habit of losing games.

“To fight through that, to score three very good goals, to win a game away from home at AAMI Park which is a hard thing to do, it just speaks volumes of this group and the players and coaching staff. I’m just very lucky to be involved in such a good team.”
