Tasmania’s quest for an A-League team is gaining momentum following a meeting between independent Denison MP Andrew Wilkie and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Wilkie is seeking federal government funds to redevelop North Hobart Oval to house the new club as the A-League looks to expand its competition.
Wilkie said Mr Turnbull will “consider the matter” as the apple isle seeks to install another Tasmanian professional sports team alongside the Sheffield Shield and Big Bash cricket teams.
“I see the main way in which the Commonwealth could assist the bid is by providing funding for the redevelopment of the North Hobart Oval, which would become the home of the new club,” Wilkie told AAP.
“It’s currently used for Aussie Rules and my understanding is that it would remain a multi-use oval.”
The FFA is drawing up its selection criteria for A-League expansion which will be released next year.
Former Melbourne Victory shareholders Robert Belteky and Harry Stamoulis are backing the Tasmanian team which attracts crowds of between 8000 and 10,000 every week.
“The passion for football in Tasmania is severely underestimated by people who haven’t spent the time there,” Belteky told SEN Radio’s World of Football program.
“We think we offer a lot more to the game than just bringing football to Tasmania, we believe it would also add to the game holistically and overall.”
Belteky said a Tasmanian team would be a win for broadcasters.
“Our view is a state of 500,000 people that have had no access to supporting their own football club, the take-up on Fox Sports subscriptions would be huge,” he said.
“We think that would add a lot to the game financially as well.”
