Another week another coach for Sydney FC and unfortunately the turnstiles at Westfield Towers continue to tick over at a faster rate than those at the SFS. That makes 4 coaches in 56 league games…a quite remarkable statistic which I’m not sure can ever have been done before (rest assured I'll be googling to find out)…56 games is about the number of games a successful European team will play in one season…and in that time Sydney would have had 4 different coaches at the helm…a record Jesus Gill himself would be proud of…that’s four different sets of ideas….four different dress senses…four different media personas…it’s no wonder those poor players are confused!

Yet again though Sydney have a new manager inheriting a squad he had no involvement in choosing….he is expected to deliver results where the coach that did choose some of them couldn’t…no mean feat…and if he doesn’t will he be given the opportunity to clear out the dead wood come season end and pick his own players and get a full run at season 4…if the answer’s "no" then why change?

After a promising start in the ACL…Sydney reverted very quickly to type and anyone who thinks that season one or two was any better or worse than this was either only there for the finals in season 1 or so drunk they don’t remember it clearly. Sydney’s 0-0 with Newcastle around Christmas in season one rates as the worst game of football I’ve ever seen live in 38 years…Sydney’s win in Auckland last season ran it very close but at least it had a goal…and a good one at that. Let’s not kid ourselves Sydney FC have always been capable of dishing up complete tripe and three coaches have now suffered with their jobs…fair enough you might say…but some of the players (and it’s a lot of than some) have been there for all three seasons and not only seem unwilling to take responsibility but also seem happy to deflect it all to quickly on the poor bugger in the brown suit and orange tie/soiled pyjamas/Armani suit (delete depenbding on which season you’re talking about)…..now I’ve been to the SFS many times and the home dressing room is not that hard to find…just head down the tunnel and turn left...which is why I find it amazing that every single Sydney FC coach is reported to have lost it within weeks.

What Sydney managed to do in seasons one and two though is win the games they really had to (bar Newcastle away last season in the finals)…testament to that is that fact that Adelaide notched their first ever win at SFS last Saturday…given they were Premiers and Grand Finalists in the first two years that’s a good record. However, this season has seen Sydney FC unable to beat the only two teams lower than them on the ladder and that is the most worrying part. Unable to beat a very poor Perth team (twice) and losing at home to Wellington in addition to the Mariners, Melbourne and Adelaide has left Sydney with a mountain to climb just to reach the top four.

Maybe John Kosmina will get an immediate response with his more up and at em approach (coupled with those playing for new contracts)…but at the end of the day the playing roster remains unchanged and frankly…it’s just not good enough right now…yes they’ve been unlucky with injuries and rep duty…but so have every other team Sydney have played this season and so Sydney were last season (with the extra hindrance of a points deducted) and with World Cup qualification on the horizon so they will be next season and the season after..unless they have no players good enough to be selected of course.

The fact is that at some point Sydney FC need to find their man and back him….give him three seasons to first recruit a squad and then build a team to develop and introduce younger player within a stable framework..not pulling them in and out like some sort of football hokey cokey dance....they need only to look up the F3 to see the template…Lawrie McKinna’s unlikely Grand Finalists of season one are now front runners again after missing out on the finals in season two despite being hit hardest of all by injuries this season…would he have still been manager of Sydney FC come season three with that performance? I think we all know the answer to that one.

A press conference has been called for 2pm today at the SFS…we all know what’s going to be announced….what I’ll be keen to find out is how long is the contract?

3.45pm update - according to the official Sydney FC press release that's just hit my in-box John Kosmina has been appointed by Sydney FC "to lead its team for the remainder of the third term"....so the new coach has the board's backing to the tune of 12 games...16 if they make the GF the hard way.
