They say it's a game of two halves, but with Gold Coast United, it seems to be a game of two seasons. Last season, when attending home games, it wasn't too optimistic to expect a win and a goal or two. But this season, all I expect is frustration and disappointment.
Don't get me wrong, the Jets and Phoenix wins were great experiences. They really did bring some hope to me for the season. But after the bore-all draw against Adelaide, I really can't see much change at the club. We took giant leaps against Phoenix, but the Adelaide match has just been a step back for the Gold Coast.
As with the 0-0 draw with the Jets, Gold Coast United just couldn't find the finishing touch. We had some good build up play and created enough chances, but we don't seem to have anyone who can consistently score. However, Djite has shown glimpses of brilliance, but until he hits his top form, Gold Coast will continue to struggle for goals.
From my point of view, Miron Bleiberg seems to have no plan B. And neither does anyone on the pitch who has the respect of the other players to follow his instructions.
Yet again against Adelaide, all we saw from Gold Coast was passing it down the wings, only for the ensuing cross to be cleared easily, or blocked and not even make it into the box.
I think we need some major improvements before we even think about finals football. Pace is one key element that we are sorely missing at Skilled Park. Although a lot of people think that Adama Traore is quite fast, I think he's only fast compared to the rest of our snail-speed team.
Another thing that I don't like about the way we play is the formation. Bleiberg opts for a 3-1-4-2 formation which is usually set up like this;
Moss
Rees - Djulbic - Traore
Thwaite
Brown - Culina - Robson - Caravella
Djite - Porter
However, I don't find this the most effective formation for a team that has some great talent. From what I saw last season, Thwaite was much more effective as a centre-back that endeavoured to attack if needed. If I was manager of United I would set up this way with a simple 4-4-2 formation.
Moss
Djulbic - Rees - Thwaite - Traore
Brown - Culina - Robson - Caravella
Djite - Porter
Everyone knows how to play in a 4-4-2 formation. The 4-4-2 is renowned for bringing balance in defence and attack. Normally, your two central midfielders are a pairing of a defensive midfielder and an attacking playmaker. Then your left and right midfielders are wingers who attack down the flanks, normally being overlapped by the two full-backs.
As you can see from my proposed line-up, every player is playing in their positions that have brought them success and reputation at other clubs and already at the club, some of these partnerships have been formed; such as Culina and Robson. Both players occupy the center of the midfield in the current position, and they seem to work well together.
I'm not saying that every dismal performance that United have had is down to the formation. In fact, more often than not, a referee seems to be our downfall.
Take the Adelaide match for example. Sergio van Dijk clearly handballed in the box, and intended or not, as the ball was travelling towards the goal, it clearly stopped a goal-scoring opportunity.
Regardless of the way the team or the referee performs, I continue to support Gold Coast and I will continue to enjoy my time in Bay 30.
Of course, I'd like to see the team succeed, but I can't see that happening with the current set-up. Some of you might see this as a negative blog, but I'd call it more of an analytical exposition, highlighting weak points and proposing changes to fix them.
And of course, as usual, the Beach was in full voice for the match and was thoroughly enjoyable. With The World Game crew from SBS at RQ's pre-match, hopefully the fans of the A-League can see that there are passionate fans of football on the Gold Coast, and people who fail to see this are just foolhardy.
As with any Gold Coast United home match, the matter of attendance is always a main focal point for discussion. Whilst it is out of the hands of the fans who do turn up, I still criticise the boycotters who stay at home rather than attend the matches of the club that they claim to ‘support'.
I understand the reasons of the people who do stay at home, but I can't agree with them. Surely there are other ways of showing the club's owners that we aren't happy with the way that he is running the club.
Progress is being made, with representatives of the supporter's club meeting with agents of the club on a monthly basis. We also have a ‘Questions to the CEO' thread in our forum, so that fans can post what they want answered from the people who run the club, and these will be put forward to the CEO during the aforementioned meetings.
I'm still optimistic for the future of this club, and I will always support them and love them.
Gold Coast United FC ‘til I die.
