Question: What did we learn from the A-League this week? Answer: The last minute of a football game is just as important as the first.
A string of late late goals secured wins for Central Coast Mariners, Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United this round, making for pulsating and dramatic finishes around the country.
All in all, it was a round of rather good quality. Let's reflect.
Goal of the Round
Perhaps for the first time since the inauguration of these awards, I've been challenged with what exactly Goal of the Round means.
Previously, it's feted the wonder strike, the classy finish or the amazing build up, but shouldn't a scrappy goal that claims three points for ones side be honoured just as much?
Probably, and because of this reckoning, praise has to go to Iain Ramsay, Rocky Visconte and Patrick Zwaanswijk for showing the composure necessary to settle their respective fixtures.
Nevertheless, I'm compelled to award it on eye-candy alone, and for mine, two names stand out above the rest for the past week.
Come on down Bruce Djite and Shannon Cole.
For the first time, you've been named joint winners of Goal of the Round on FourFourTwo's awards blog.
Bruce, your first strike against Wellington was wonderful, but your silky second was sheer class.
Shannon, your dipping volley against Fury was straight out of the top drawer.
Well done, boys. May we see more?
Save of the Round
A few top contenders in this category, with Matthew Ryan getting down low late, and Eugene Galekovic dropping to thwart Mark Bridge.
But, having pulled off a number of strong saves over past weeks, the award this round goes to Perth Glory's Tando Velaphi.
Velaphi dived smartly to his left to finger-tip an Erik Paartaulu shot to safety, while he also flew to the same side to frustrate a Mitch Nichols bomb.
Sheer weight of numbers earns Velaphi the award because in truth, Visconte's late winner wouldn't have been needed if the Glory custodian hadn't performed those stops for his side.
Sour Puss Prize
The Twitterdome lit up following Scott Jamieson's post match interview with Lara Pitt.
Sure, he probably had half a case to feel aggrieved. But there are a number of things wrong here.
Firstly, you don't dob your old team mate -- in this case Travis Dodd - in to the country. I'm fairly sure Dodd may have said: "Sorry Jamo, I probably fouled you there, bud", but I'm damn sure he didn't say: "Jamo, see Lara over there, go tell her I fouled you. It'll make us both look good!"
Secondly, you channel your energy towards finding an answer. Had the likes of wasteful Brazilian Bruno Cazarine and Mark Bridge finished their chances - one of which you craftily created, Scott - then the "foul" wouldn't have been such an issue.
And lastly, you simply have more class than to have a cry on camera, a whine on widescreen. It's unbecoming.
Top Tweets
As with every week, may we finish with some of the top tweets sent to the #aleague hash-tag over the past round or so.
Firstly, Joachimorjoe questioned Michael Zappone's evaluation of Sydney's ability to haul themselves into the top six: "Wow, the commentator has already called the end of Sydney FC's #aleague title defence. Massive call despite how bad they've been." - In such a small league, the past has proven what even a small run can do. Definitely agree it's too early to call stumps on SFC yet.
Secondly, serial A-League twitterer Sui1977 questioned why there's no corporate interest in the Reds: "Why the hell have Adelaide not got a sponsor on their shirt? You'd think after how well they've played, there'd be interest." - Again, agreed.
While lastly, Scott Higgins - also known as Giggles (@GCUgiggles) and Gold Coast United's second string stopper - had this bit of standup for Viteslav Lavicka: "Think Sydney FC coach gonna be speeding around the city tonite hoping to get a ticket from police...Only way he is gonna get 3 points!!" - Brilliant.
Till next week, enjoy the wonderful world of football...
