Is there such a thing as ‘too much football”….now at any point of my 38 years I’d have said not on your nelly however yesterday morning after being woken at 4.30am by the new addition to our family – a 6 week old puppy called Aston – I thought I might as well stay up and give the new innovation from Fox Sports a whirl.

Kicking off with the main game of Pompey v Man Utd and quickly realizing I had no real interest in the result I was relieved that I could now, with one touch of my as yet under-used red button, go into “football overdrive” and be launched into a four game frenzy. Now here’s where the innovation is so clever…had I been faced, as in season’s past, with just the main game I’d have probably gone back to bed and got an extra hours sleep.

But now I had the choice of watching Birmingham hopefully lose heavily at home (they didn’t but a disputed last minute equalizer felt just as good at the time), see if Sven’s Man City could make it two out of two see Fulham and Bolton kick lumps out of each other in the rain or see if Reading could hold Chelsea to a draw.

Over the next 2 hours I spent a little bit of time watching each of the 5 games but it seemed every time I swapped over I’d miss something crucial in another game. Which led me to spend large chunks of the time watching the initial entry screen where you see all four games simultaneously on one screen to keep tabs on all games at once. This then involved moving as close to the TV as a 5 year old likes to sit as my 42 inch plasma effectively became 4 x 12 inch screens. I’ve already sent an email to Samsung to see when they are planning an 84 incher so I can watch all 4 games without compromising my visual pleasure.

For those of you that haven’t tried it yet…..try it this weekend…and unless the team you follow is playing I bet, like me, you’ll spend most of your time in the spilt screen format trying to watch, literally, 4 games at once. Thankfully you can only highlight one audio at a time as four competing commentaries could drive a man (and his puppy) insane.

Is there such a thing as too much football….of course not…but there’s potentially such a thing as too much football at once!

It’s a seriously cool innovation though having been available in the UK for a while where people can choose to watch any of the Champions League games taking place simultaneously. For fans of lesser teams like me (god it hurt to type that!) it means I will be able to see my team live much more than ever before and skip the so-called big games for where the real action is…the race for 9th place!
