PERHAPS it's just me?

Sometimes we have opinions on things that place us fairly and squarely in the minority. A case in point for me involved the movie, "The English Patient".

At the time it came out I remember it receiving rave reviews. Friends and acquaintances that went to see it all seemed to love it. Some of them were gushing in their praise.

As for me, I hated it. I won't get started right now on where I thought it felt short because it would be the subject of a distinctly separate, and lengthy, blog of its own.

I was amused some years later when Seinfeld did an episode that parodied the same experience. They even chose the same movie! I felt vindicated.

Anyway, back to football.

My "perhaps it's just me" moment this past week involved one of the Reds' finest. Well, actually, I don't think he is one on the finest, that's the issue.

Football is all about opinions and as much as I don't like to bag players individually, blogs such as this one are about expressing views on the game and indeed, the on-field combatants.

My issue is with Robbie Cornthwaite. He's a young, up and coming player and shows potential. That's all he is, at the moment.

He is not, in my opinion, Socceroo squad material.

Sure he scores a goal every now and then and he's reasonably solid on the defensive front. In terms of overall skill on the ball though and ability to distribute it forward without going the 'chip in hope' route, he has a way to go.

From a Reds perspective I feel more comfortable seeing Valkanis or Costanzo partner the beast in the heart of our defence, as opposed to Robbie. What they may lack in pace they make up for in guile and ability on the ball.

Robbie's not quite there, as yet. The fact that he received a yellow card against the Mariners and is thus suspended for the first finals game against Melbourne just might be a blessing in disguise.

Time will of course be the ultimate judge.

As they say in the classics, "harsh but fair".
