IF ONLY the A-League were as entertaining as the Hives.
I of course refer to that brilliant band that played at Sydney Metro on Tuesday evening and basically packed more entertainment into the space of two hours than an entire four seasons of Australia's top flight football competition (a nutcase lead guitarist is slightly more appealing than Beau Busch – his positioning for Adelaide's second goal was sublime, though).Perhaps then, John Kosmina should consider dressing his side up in black and white suits, give them all guitars and replace that flapping 'Hyundai' sign that constitutes half-time entertainment at the SFS with a band of charismatic, entertaining Swedes – it can't possibly be any worse than hearing about John Aloisi's conveniently-timed injuries...
It has just occurred to yours truly that this blog has transformed into something approaching a "come all Sydney FC haters" cult in recent times.
Truth be told, Sydney's match was the only one from the weekend that I seem to remember with any clarity (It's been a massive week) – and the general pathetic-ness of the performances of both sides is a stark contrast to the vocal work and showmanship of Pelle Almqvist.
One might praise Aurelio Vidmar for his tactical ingenuity but I watched on in disgust as a match in front of a rare crowd was wasted to tactics that make Bolton look like Barcelona (coached by Craig Foster...)
At this point, a comment that John Kosmina made to me some time ago in an interview resonates through the vast expanses of my mind: at the time he thought there no obligation to entertain crowds and that his job description simply entailed winning.
Have his employment prospects been helped by such a philosophy?
I leave you to be the judge.
Does such a philosophy serve the league – or football in this country – at such a crucial stage in its history?
Likewise...
There are of course, those who will argue that football is a game to be interpreted, a game where all philosophies should be applied and be allowed to flourish.
Perhaps though, an exception should be made in such unique circumstances?
PS. I'm seriously considering taking my princess to the V-Festival (does anyone suggest otherwise?). Also: Has the pointlessness of playing Adelaide's match against Sydney at a cricket ground convinced anyone else that humanity has lost all sense of reason?
