FINALLY Perth Glory have something to cheer about. No, they didn't win back to back games (or even win one game)... but instead have been relieved of the services of James ‘he shoots, and the ball is in the back of the stands’ Robinson.
The 26-year-old will always be remembered for scoring the winner against Adelaide in the Semi-Final because, well I guess that’s the only useful thing he’s ever done in the A-League. His signing, along with little-known Sydney player Marton Vass, was announced on a day where many expected Chris Grossman or Scott Chipperfield to be announced. You’ve got to ask the question why? It perhaps would have made a little sense if he was Australian, but at the same time keeping in mind that this is a player with three bad/average seasons in the A-League.
I can almost guarantee he would not have been signed if Ferguson had ever watched Robinson play for ten minutes. Although it would have been hard to see him play live because even when fit, James constantly does not get ten minutes on the pitch. Why? Simple, he’s average, at best.
Robinson has scored just three goals in 28 A-League appearances and a total of 21 in his whole career. Going on Robbo’s strike rate, the chance of him scoring for us next season is about the same as William Gallas being awarded Arsenal’s clubman of the year (maybe a tad harsh).
Of the three forwards we have now signed, we have a combined total of only 11 A-League goals. Compared to the Gold Coast who have signed just one forward, a player with over 15 goals in two seasons, a player that is likely to outscore the combined total of our three forwards this season alone.
What made the signing of the former Accrington Stanley player even worse was Ian Ferguson’s quote: "I'm excited about getting Robinson because he's the kind of player opposition teams hate defending.”
As I said before, watch him play for ten minutes! James Robinson is hardly a player opposition teams hate defending. In fact I am probably more likely to worry an A-League defence then he is.
Okay so maybe I’m still being a little harsh. He’s not the worst player in the world (though I wouldn’t argue with worst player in the A-League). The big problem for me is that he will take up an import spot.
Coming into the A-League four seasons after everyone else is obviously a disadvantage and means we do not have the first pick of home-grown players. This is why we need to pick and choose our imports wisely and for me Robinson is a huge waste of an import spot
My question is where exactly will our goals come from? I am not worried about Santalab, because I believe, given the opportunity, Brendon is capable of scoring eight or so goals, a respectable goal tally in the A-League. Our other two forwards are the ones I’m worried about. Neither has regularly been scoring goals, and although Jeremy Brockie has shown promise, his form is often inconsistent.
A month or so ago ‘The Don’ said he would sign us our own Shane Smeltz (basically a proven goal-scorer). We are, as of yet, still to sign anyone, or even be linked with anyone in the mould of Smeltz. Hopefully the signing of a proven goal-scorer is not too far away, and is definitely coming, because looking at our current forwards doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence.
James Robinson please note: If you should read this, I am just joking and have every confidence you will be top scorer next season. Right after Megan Fox asks me out on a date...
