ADELAIDE may be lying seventh on the table and struggling to register a win, a draw – or even a goal – but according to Viddie we’re pretty close to peaking. Basically he’s saying, it can’t get much better than this.

Whoo-hoo! I'm excited. Not.

After the game in Perth Viddie was quoted as saying:

"Even last year (when) we were winning games, we haven't played as well as we did tonight. Everyone was very good, the only thing we didn't do was score a goal and unfortunately the game can be very cruel. We've still to remain positive and if we keep playing that way, we'll win more games than we lose."

Now, I can understand that Viddie has the job of keeping morale high. That his on-camera demeanour must be more positive than his dressing room persona. Even that he may be overcompensating for the legendary "piss-ant" rave. Unfortunately, saying something like this is about as helpful to the fans as suggesting that Romario is heading back for another guest stint.

You see, last year we played well and lost the Grand Final by a goal, made the ACL final after a giant-killing run and were pipped for the Premiership (the real deal) on goals scored. But apparently we're playing better this year. All I can say is that the standard of the A-League must have jumped way beyond my estimation. Or that, for whatever reason, Viddie is bullshitting.

We saw Pim Verbeek do it the other night after Australia did an Adelaide United impression against the Dutch. Hell, maybe that was the idea. Socceroos do Adelaide and Pim does Viddie. Funny guy, that Pim. After all, he seemed pretty impressed by the game the Socceroos played. Until Mark Bosnich played 'little boy' to Pim's 'Emperor with no clothes'. "Australia were crap - especially going forward," said Mark. "Oh yeah, they were, weren't they", most of us replied.

Now, I like Viddie and I'm still not calling for another coach. But fair cop, Viddie, tell us the truth.

If he'd said something like, "I'm furious. We had that game on a plate and we threw it away. Tando was terrific but with those chances we should have scored - and we just didn't. It's not good enough. Not for me. Not for the players and not for the fans. Especially not for the fans. Something has to change and I include my tactics in that equation. From here on in we get better. That was unacceptable. There were passages of good play but every passage met with a dead end. From now on, if we hit a wall we break it down," then maybe we would have believed it. Or felt change was coming. Or, at least, agreed.

I don't feel like that.

Fair play to Perth Glory who took their chance after changing things around. They're a better team this year. We're not.

Also, welcome back Fabien Barbiero, who looked like the player we've been missing. All is not lost. Reid will be back one day and the team really did try. But it's just not working and someone has to recognise that.

There are those who will feel it's disloyal to keep demanding a change of approach. I'm not doing it just because I'm angry. I'm stuck to this team and I won't be leaving. I'm asking the question in the same way that I would if I saw a good friend spiralling down a path towards self-destruction. I may not be able to stop him but I have to keep asking if that really is where he wants to be going.

I wouldn't bother if I thought we were just in a bad year with a poor squad. Some years are like that. I still think we have the personnel to be winning games and challenging for the finals. It's just that something is broken.

We have played as well as we did last week, Viddie. In fact, under your management, we've played a hell of a lot better. We know it. You know it. Don't feed us crap. Get us back on track.
