OF COURSE Gold Coast United are not going to win their inaugural A-League season undefeated. Only a fool would believe that.

But what if we do?

The achievement would remain forever a gem of world footballing history. Gold Coast United would have instant global recognition. From the cobbled carriageways of Toledo to the dusty dens of Timbuktu, footballing connoisseurs would be talking about it for years to come.

But of course we won't win the season undefeated.

So what if we drop a few games along the way, but still win the A-League?

That would still be an extraordinary, and historic, achievement. By all accounts I've read, no other newly-formed club has ever achieved this feat in an established national league.

The global footballing media would still be queuing up for interviews with Gold Coast players and officials. Miron Bleiberg would still be knocking back offers from Europe. Clive Palmer would still have a great big smile on his face.

Jason Culina's decision to come home would be thoroughly vindicated, and his signing would be forever entrenched as a pivotal moment in A-League history.

All of that would be great for Gold Coast fans, of course. It would be great for the local tourism industry too. But it would also be great for the A-League.

Just consider what a boost to the local game this kind of media story would be, whether we won the league undefeated or not.

Leading into our nation's third World Cup appearance, fans would be flocking to the Gold Coast's games. Wealthy investors around the globe would be looking at the A-League with fresh eyes. Players everywhere would start to consider a move Down Under more seriously.

Spectator sport is all about capturing the public's imagination. If the FFA want to quickly win over new fans, our "beautiful" game needs to offer something more than just grueling, physical games and 0-0 draws. We need that magic something, a bit of va-va-voom!

Gold Coast United's team has been deliberately constructed from Day One to provide exciting, attacking football at the highest level the salary cap will permit. Bleiberg, Palmer, Culina, and others at the club are all committed to not just winning, but also entertaining the fans.

That is the whole "narrative" of Gold Coast United to date. This is our story, for better or worse, love it or hate it - va-va-VOOM!!!

The first few chapters of our story have already been written - the birth of the club, starting with nothing but an idea, and then the slow building of a team of quality players. Now, as our players finally take to the pitch in competitive matches, it's time to turn the page on the next thrilling chapter.

So will this story have a fairytale ending? Can the dream become a reality?

Let me tell you honestly, as a fan, I am happy enough just to have an exciting new team to support. If we can make the finals, so much the better. If we can win the league (and I think we can) that will be absolutely brilliant.

And if we can go all the way undefeated, that will be simply awesome.

But even if we don't make the finals, and even before our first game has been played, it's already been a huge year for the club.

I'll be taking my kids autograph-hunting this week, and watching the Gold Coast players in action against a local team. Even that, in itself, is a kind of fairytale come true.

We're here! We've arrived! And we're on our way - Va-va-VOOM!!!
