THE BIG news in Queensland Roar circles this week has been Craig Moore.
Queensland’s marquee man is always the focus of media attention. He is paid the most, he is the captain and his footballing pedigree is second to none at the club. He is also an idiot. We have all read that Moore and two Melbourne players were caught out betting on A-League matches. They broke the rules and have paid for it, but that isn’t what makes Moore an idiot. What does make him an idiot is the fact he thought he could predict the outcome of an A-League game.
Does he even follow what goes on in this topsy-turvy league? It is surely the most unpredictable competition in world football. Without an Old Firm or big four to dominate the A-League, any attempt to predict a weekend’s results is fraught with danger.
Those of you who participate in a tipping competition or fantasy football know that you cannot rely on anything or anyone in this league. A month back, I was sitting pretty in the upper echelons of a tipping competition but then Perth and Wellington got their act together. Now I am nothing more than a mid table nobody.
Moore should have known better than most that there are no certainties in the A-League. The very team that he captains spent the first few months playing like Jekyll and Hyde. Away from home they are still undefeated but it was only recently that the Roar got the home ground monkey off their back.
Although the results are hard to pick there are of course certain areas of the league that are as predictable as spam in your inbox. Sydney fans will always find some reason to complain about their club.
The “it” boy of the current season will be linked with high-profile foreign clubs and then wind up in some Romanian backwater. And of course, at least one import will disprove the hype surrounding his signing and play like a complete donkey.
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately for the bookies, these are things that cannot be bet on. Instead those who like a flutter have to contend with the standard stuff – match results, top goal scorer, premiers etc.
Although, I think that pinning my hopes, and hence my emotional wellbeing, to my team’s fortunes is a big enough gamble for me.
