The season so far seems a little, well, under the weather. I subscribe to the camp that the season should not start in the finals of its rivals, but I'm more concerned with the consequence of having 11 teams.

How can the scheduling boffins realistically look at the draw and decide a team should have two byes in three weeks? This must be the most mind numbing scheduling decision ever embarked on in Australian sport. I cannot fathom the wisdom in this nor the fact that some teams will have played each other several times before the season has just passed half way, or must play each other several times in the last couple of months.

You may disagree but I firmly believe any sport needs strong scheduling to be successful in the stands. The AFL is very mindful of this and spends big amounts on making sure their schedules deliver maximum impact and spread the big games evenly. I know the A-League is young but I think a bigger effort is needed here and if that is too expensive then maybe playing every team in the comp before you start rematching them is a step back in the right direction.

I also subscribe to the camp that unpredictability is good for the league, but can drive a fan mad.

How can these teams continually take us on rollercoaster rides? Why can't any team back up a title? Granted Victory gave it a real shot and showed how to keep a champion team together last season but it is frustrating for the fans to turn up and see your table topping team from last year look out of its depth this year. I find it surprising that five of last year's final six are currently propping up the table.

Despite this surreal start to the season, it has at least been enjoyable, with great stories like Roar and Fury flexing their guns and surprises like Hearts fantasy football team being basically useless.

BRUCE ALMIGHTY

Now I don't want to put too much pressure on the lad, but you need to net 15 goals this season because you are filling massive boots. Boots so big they once stayed in China for a week.

Yes Smeltz's replacement Bruce Djite is here and I am intrigued and excited to see what a Gold Coast attack will look like with his pace on the end of it. I would like to see him partnered with Porter upfront but Miron is expected to do the unexpected so we will see.

It has been quite a torrid time for the club but now is the time for the team to show their metal, even with two games in hand we unbelievably don't sit on the bottom of the ladder and when those games are caught up they may be crucial in deciding how close to the top spot we are at seasons end.

So let's get back to the field and say goodbye to the bye.
