A little over a month ago NQFC fans could have been forgiven for donating their jerseys to the local council for hi-visability safety wear. There was no coach, no CEO, no Robbie Fowler, or many other players for that matter. However with about a month until the boys take on Robbie and the Purple Puppets in Perth the fans' faith (helped along by the council refusing to take on the lime green for fear it was too distracting to motorists) has been rewarded.
First was the appointment of our new head coach Frantisek (lovingly known as Franz) Straka. A coach with a pedigree that would rival most within the A-League. A former star Czechozlovakian defender, who played 35 times for his country including a visit to the 1990 World Cup quarter finals in Italy. He was also undefeated in charge of his country, the one time he did, beating Malta 1-0. This stat initially caused some concerns for the fans, however it was later discovered that the somewhat journeyman manager was actually sacked and replaced by the then head of Czechozlovakian Football Federation.
After that time there has been some very solid signings indeed. Our goalkeeping stocks already looked good, with last year's winner for the fan-voted Player of the Year award Justin Pasfield and the signing of Brisbane Roar's (and local Nth QLDer) Matthew Ham, the club has managed to secure a strong backline with Andrew Kilian (captain of FC Shalke 04 Reserves), Togolese international Eric Akoto, and former Everton player Mark Hughes.
The midfield has been bolstered with the signing of returning Aussie midfielder Simon Storey who has spent the last four years playing in the Scottish leagues and won an A-League title with Melbourne Victory, as well as young and exciting prospects Panny Nikas, Isaka Cernak and Adam Casey. Last year's standouts Dyron Daal and David Williams have so far been joined up front by the most hated man in NZ, Chris Payne, who showed at the end of last year that he knows where the goal is and can match it with the A-League crowd.
All the news of player signings have been getting fans in an excited mood, and Fury supporters are starting to show our faces in the local watering holes with pride and even talking about finals football!
The only mood dampener for the fans is that we don't know when we are going to be able to buy our tickets this season with the club still not releasing membership or ticket sales.
