It was inevitable. The title that is, not the fact that Robbie Kruse has rocketed to the top of the A-League scoring charts with 5 goals in only 7 games this season, 4 of them coming in his last 4 appearances. An enviable record for a striker, no matter where they are in the world.
The relationship that Kruse has with the A-League and its myriad of fans is a solid ‘love-hate sort of thing'. There are those among us who hate him, no matter what he does. The sort of face that you just love to punch even. Then there are the eternal optimists among us, the sort that see the goodness in a steaming turd on the bottom of your slipper on a Sunday morning. Everyone is nice in their eyes.
Then there is me, the warmly affectionate. I used to be neutral, but over the season his performances have been enough to upgrade me to warmly affectionate. I appreciate what he offers to the team, but that does not mean I am blinded by my undying love for the guy. Like many, I do believe he has a serious attitude problem, one that is not concurrent with a flourishing international career. Some say that doesn't matter, but I firmly believe it does, as it affects everyone in the dressing room. Best case in point is Joel Griffiths. A player who is in good form but has a rubbish attitude should never be picked for the national team, simply because they rub people the wrong way. Then again, that is just me.
However, underneath that ‘Holier than thou' persona lies a pretty damn good footballer. His biggest improvement in the last 12 months at Victory has been his shots on target. This is what I believe to be the biggest contributor to his success so far this season. The fact that he is testing the keeper on a regular basis ensures that more often than not, one will go eventually rest in the back of the net. A far cry from the early days of the A-League where balls ended up in row HH. This basic skill that all U5s should be able to do with ease is ensuring that Robbie ends up on the scoresheet more often than not.
Despite his recent good form, Robbie is nowhere ready enough for a Socceroos berth yet. If he ends up with 20 goals by the end of the season, maybe, but he still has a lot to do to ensure he deserves to be there.
That said, he's doing far more than Alex Brosque.
A tough game against Gold Coast on a high after snatching points away in Townsville, hopefully a buzzing blue crowd cheers the boys on to another crucial victory to ensure that we're up near the pointy end of the table come New Years. Not to mention, let's hope Robbie continues his rich vein of form for many years to come!
