For a while now I, like many other suffering Victory fans, have been crying out for a striker to at least cover over the deficiencies that we have in that area, despite the sterling effort by Dugandzic on the weekend suggesting that he could have a role to play in reclaiming the title.
However, as always, there are creative differences. Some want this, others want that. Well, I'm going to tell you what I want, and why.
We've got the fast, skilful China-dolls. Thompson, Kruse and Dugandzic are all similar players. They nip around the edge of the box, stretch the defence with their mazy runs and generally be a nuisance (Kruse's speciality). Is the striker I want another one of these fragile speedsters?
Well, unless it is David Villa or Ashley Young, then the answer is no. We've got these players already, there is no point in bringing in another one to shunt them along the line. No, the striker I want will be a focal point of our attack. He's big, he's strong, he has international pedigree and he knows where the goals are.
I know such a man.
His name is Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. At 6ft 3, he would easily be one of, if not the, tallest in the squad. He has a big frame to absorb all the pressure that A-League defences provide, giving ample opportunity for Thompson and Co to work their magic in the box. Knows where the goals are, as proven by his success in Holland and Scotland, two leagues who are a step ahead of the A-League at this point in time in my ever so humble opinion. What's more, he is now a free agent since his contract at Hull City was allowed to expire, he is ripe for the picking.
At 31, he's not too old, and after just coming from a season in the EPL, I'd imagine the A-League would be a walk in the park for him, fitness wise at least.
With our visa spots left, and the fact that he is now uncontracted, I firmly believe that Little Jan is a prime target for a Victory attack that now needs to differentiate itself, as A-League defences have learnt how to handle Archie and his runs, as evidenced by being the player most caught offside last season. Throw in a touch of Dutch brutality up front, and I firmly believe we'll see a return to the halcyon days of the greatest strike partnership in A-League history.
I've given my view on the subject, I know throw it up to you, my fellow Victory supporters.
What sort of striker do YOU want?
