The past few games for the Jets have been great. OK, there was a 4-0 biff in the nose in Wellington, but that's just a blip.
How do we know the last game was just a blip? Look at the past few matches before that. Alright, the game against the Galaxy was only an exhibition match, but no matter who you're playing, both teams still wanted to win. And the Jets won.
Then look at the game against Melbourne Heart. Now, admittedly, Melbourne Heart have all the attacking potency of a soggy tea bag, but to go down a man in the first ten minutes or so, then score two goals and never really look like conceding, takes some skill and some tenacity. The Jets have both in spades at the moment.
Now look at the game against the Gold Coast at home. A composed, controlled and confident win against a top-four side. Again, the opposition never really looked like they would score. They had a few chances but you felt as if the Jets would breakthrough and they did it with style through Ali Abbas and Saso Petrovski.
So when they go over to Wellington with only a couple of days rest (if you call it that), with a severely-reduced side, and the Phoenix absolutely desperate to get a win under their belt for their home fans after a poor recent run, and get thumped, then it's only a blip.
I wouldn't fancy being Melbourne next week, as they are struggling for form this season and are neck-and-neck with Newcastle to stay in the top six. Alright, it won't be a walk over for the Jets like the other Melbourne team, but I can't wait to see Ljubo and Wehrman vs Muscat (err, wait a minute, is Ljubo's suspension only one game?).
It's been an interesting two-thirds of a season so far for the Jets, if you can call it 'interesting', so let's do a bit of a Christmas time Jets wrap-up. The club nearly disappears up its own Constantine, but is rescued by a Tinkler.
The team plays about five games it should have won, but instead loses them, then loses it's captain and creative playmaker, only to go on a mid-season run and sprint from the bottom of the table up to fifth and now down to sixth again.
In the meantime it wins against a highly fancied overseas lot with two US internationals and a guy who can score from halfway and make the ball go into the net by showing his tats (Beckham, I mean). I'm getting vertigo.
What does it all mean for the run-in to the finals?
It's pretty obvious that the Jets probably won't win the Premiership. Doesn't take a genius to work that out. But the Championship is another thing.
There are three sides that are a certainty for the finals (Brisbane, Adelaide and Gold Coast), then lagging slightly behind is the Central Coast, who could possibly "do a Perth" and lose the next eight games and find themselves struggling to stay in the top six. Well, they probably won't but for a Jets fan, you can always wish bad things on your nearest rivals.
Then there's the four teams jostling for the last two spots, they being the Jets, Melbourne Victory, Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Heart. Of these, I predict that it will be Victory and the Jets taking the last two spots in the top six. Heart can't score and the Phoenix can't win away from home.
Sydney and Perth just seem completely devoid of ideas at the moment, so I can't see them going on the sort of run necessary to get into the finals, and Fury, whilst having an "extreme to the maxx" coach who is very entertaining, won't get there. I really hope they are there next season though.
Happy Christmas to everyone reading and to the excellent 442 crew, I hope you all relax and enjoy Christmas and get back to the stadiums in the New Year to support the A-League. Cheers.
