All great ensembles have their unsung heroes. I can think of Major Gowen from Fawlty Towers, Peter Criss of Kiss fame and, perhaps a little selfishly, the unpaid bloggers that contribute to a certain award winning football website.

Add to that list Erik Paartalu - the lynchpin of the Brisbane Roar midfield and Dolph Lundgren doppelganger.

While Matt McKay is busy representing his country and Thomas Broich is being rightly lauded by my fellow Roar blogger, Erik Paartalu has been doing the hard yards sitting at the back of Brisbane's always adventurous midfield, feeding the forward runs of pretty much everybody else in the side.

Tall, powerful, athletic and composed, he is the player a type of player that Brisbane has never before possessed. Or, to put it another way, he is the player that Chad Gibson perhaps should have been and that David Dodd never could be.

Now, I am the first to admit that when he was signed back in February my first response was Erik Paarta-who?

However, I am reasonably confident I am not alone in that regard as Paartalu fell in to the hole left by the disbandment of the National Soccer League and began plying his trade with some of the more unfashionable clubs in Scotland.

He spent four years there and strangely seemed to make little impact, not once to my recollection being considered a bolter for even the most under strength of Socceroos sides.

However, Roar gaffer Ange Postecoglou has made a habit this season of bringing out the best in players that have previously underperformed and Paartalu is no exception, although he doesn't get the credit that many of his more attacking teammates do.

Well, it's time for that to change. And what better way to credit an unsung hero than by giving him his own chant from the Northern End?

Of course the supporters are way ahead of me and have been toiling away on their homage to the marauding number 6. The only problem seems to be that nobody seems able to decide what daggy pop hit should be ripped off in his honour.

Personally, I believe Abba's "Waterloo" is the only contender worthy of mention thus far but I'm sure the loyal and handsome readers of this blog will better it if given the chance.

So submit your suggestions and let's see if we can't make Erik Paartalu the unsung hero no more. And remember, the daggier the original song, the better.
