Whilst one Costa Rican provided one assist and found the back of the net as Victory romped to a much need 3-0 win over arch rivals, Sydney FC, the severe lack of game time for his fellow countryman is rather perplexing.
Two matches ago we saw Marvin Angulo start against Newcastle Jets and in the process put in one of, if not his best performance in Melbourne Victory colours. Surely this would be a sign of things to come - confidence had been place in him and it had paid dividends. How wrong we all were.
Two weeks later against Heart, his performance against the Jets failed to even gain him a place on the bench. This week, he returned to the bench and made his appearance in the 88th minute when the game was all but won. And that is a familiar story for the 24 year-old Costa Rican.
So far this season Angulo has made six appearances for Victory, with only one of them being that aforementioned start, for a total of 158 minutes of game time. Taking out the 90 minutes against Newcastle, that's an average of a little less than 12 minutes a game. Hardly the minutes needed to make an impact during one's loan spell.
Also what is becoming increasingly apparent from my point of view anyway, is that Ernie Merrick prefers the Welshman, Geoff Kellaway, as his first attacking substitution. Let it be known that I have nothing against Kellaway but few would argue that he offers more in the attacking sense than Angulo.
Saturday night was a case in point, you would natural assume that Angulo would be the perfect substitution for Dugandzic without losing any of our attacking zest. Both are technically very good and not afraid to take on their opponents. Also both have the often-frustrating habit of taking that extra touch when a shot would have been just as good. But that's an aside. As history shows, Merrick chose to go with Kellaway over Angulo as his first subsitution.
It may be that Merrick is giving Kellaway every opportunity to impress as an injury replacement but surely not at the expense of the team. Countless times on Saturday night, Kellaway misplaced passes and I lost count of the time that his crosses go straight into the arms of Liam Reddy. After a while you could almost sense the frustration of his fellow team mates.
When given the opportunity, Angulo's combination with Hernandez has always looked pleasing to the eye. With El Zorro hitting his straps it would have seemed to be a perfect opportunity to put a ponderous Sydney defence to the sword and give Angulo's confidence a boost in the process.
With important matches against both Brisbane and Adelaide in the offing, it is now time for Merrick and the coaching hierarchy to give Angulo the chance he deserves and some decent time to shine because at the moment he's not getting that opportunity. Plus the South End has a really good Marvin Angulo chant for when he does make it onto the field.
