Round 7 saw little movement on the W-League table with Perth Glory's comfortable home win keeping them on top of the ladder.  Crucial wins for Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar kept them ahead of the fray while Canberra United and Western Sydney suffered for their losses.

Here are the talking points.

1.  Speed Kills: Oh what I would give to witness a W-League sprint. Lisa De Vanna, Emma Kete, Kyah Simon, Hayley Raso, Katrina Gorry, Caitlin Foord all demonstrated on the weekend just how deadly pace is in the final third.  Sydney FC's match winning goal was a perfect example as Chloe Logarzo, Simon and Kete combined for a devastating counter attack with the final play of the match.  As equally exciting is that that pace is being combined with excellent decision making.

2.  The more things change, the more they stay the same: While the W-League ladder is extremely tight this year and although new teams have come in the finals equation, one thing that still remains is that Sydney FC and Brisbane continue there or thereabouts.  The two powerhouses have evolved significantly in the last couple of years but what they do demonstrate is the importance of having a winning culture at a club.

3.  Hold your ground: The W-League is a tight competition.  Real tight.  Pressure is on every side to keep getting results because any loss any will see you slip several places and out of the finals.  Conversely a can see you jump right back in the finals fray. So the mantra is keep winning.  Simple right?

4. Defending champions are on the ropes: Speaking of losses proving costly, despite having only lost two matches this campaign (the same number as second placed Sydney and third placed Brisbane), Canberra United find themselves in sixth position.  Four points off a finals place and although they have a game in hand (a tough one against Perth), every match from here on in is a "must win".

Top 5 players of the Week (in no particular order)

1. Renee Rollason (Sydney FC) has turned into fantastic defender for the Sky Blues.  An ex-midfielder, Rollason provides the spine for a young defence while using her playmaking ability to great effect.

2. Jessica McDonald (Melbourne Victory) has stepped up her output after a slow start.  The American who was picked up late has now become the focal point of Melbourne's attack and is backing up that trust.

3. Katrina Gorry (Brisbane Roar) has stepped into the Brisbane side like she has always been there.  When it comes to the final third Gorry makes Brisbane tick and it was her work rate and creativity that dragged Brisbane back into the match

4.  Kate Gill (Perth Glory) like McDonald is the pillar of the Glory attack.  On the weekend she was again involved in almost all of Perth's attacks and finished the afternoon with a goal although she could have had a couple more.

5.  Hannah Brewer (Newcastle Jets) was instrumental in containing the Brisbane attack in the first half and worked hard to stem the flood in the second.  Growing in confidence, she was also involved in several promising forward forays.
