All in all I had been waiting approximately 32 months for what occurred on Saturday night. And no, I don't mean seeing Melbourne Victory lose to Perth Glory at home (pretty sure that was a much longer period of time) but instead seeing my team in their first competitive hit-out at AAMI Park.

It wasn't exactly the home debut that we were all hoping for as Perth, aided by some ordinary refereeing, decided to take a leaf out of the Mariners' playbook and ruined our chances of getting one over our hometown rivals in the who is going to win and or score first on our home turf contest.

Saturday night's match brought back memories of Sunday September 4, 2005 when Victory played their first ever home game at Olympic Park, coincidentally also against Perth Glory. Looking back at the teamsheets for that day, there are many familiar names that took part in that historic occasion that were again present on Saturday night. For Perth there was Jamie Harnwell and Jamie Coyne, whilst for Victory there were Messrs Muscat, Leijer and Celeski, although young Billy was wearing the purple of Perth that day.

I remember that day fondly. I remember getting into the ground about two hours before kickoff (not sure exactly why) and purchasing my first ever Victory scarf, a scarf I still wear to every game. But my fondest memory of the day would have to be the roar that erupted about the ground as Kevin Muscat slotted home an 85th minute penalty to make bring the scores level at 2-2. On that day 17,960 people saw theVictory's first ever home game, which was 394 more than were at Saturday's first ever home game at AAMI Park. Although like many others, I am struggling to work out where the other 13,000 would fit.

Like that Sunday afternoon in 2005, Perth again scored two goals but this time around Victory were unable to match their feats of that momentous day and it highlighted what every Melbourne Victory fan knew in their heart of hearts - we need a striker and we need one desperately.

With an impressive 71% of possession (another figure I would dispute) there simply wasn't the cutting edge in front of goal that an out and out striker would provide. Having heaps of the ball is great but if there is no outlet for all that possession, it's pretty much a waste of possession.

With news filtering through as I write this of the distinct possibility of losing Carlos Hernandez (who in all honesty is not fully fit anyway and probably wouldn't be playing if not for the absence of Thompson and Kruse) for 12 months courtesy of one of the many ordinary Perth Glory tackles, what was meant to be a momentous night could quite possibility could be even more disastrous than first thought.
