Three weeks to go before the real stuff begins. It's been a long pre-season (25 weeks so far) and the form of the Reds has been, well let's just say, a tad patchy.

Still it has been a time of experimentation. It's been interesting to say the least; the whole concept of playing games without scoring goals. All things must come to an end though - I think it's time to once again find the back of the net.

As an aside, the players themselves are no doubt equally as frustrated at the team's inability to score this year. Scott Jamieson, talking on local radio, suggested that he might look at not only crossing the ball but also then sprinting into the box, so he can get a head on it as well. He also made reference to "if we can find a striker" the club might do well in the ACL. Touché.

So with the first game against the reigning ACL champions, Pohang Steelers, rapidly approaching, it's time to look ahead and consider the starting formation. I'm assuming here that there will be a full squad of players to choose from.

In goals - the old faithful, ever reliable, Reds player of the season, all-round nice guy, a generous tipper - the mighty Eugene. Already we're looking good.

Across the back - I'd go for a standard foursome - Mullen, Boogaard (assuming he comes in), Rudan and Cassio. No place for Robbie C in my line-up (sorry Stephen!), nor is there room for Fyfe or Jamieson.

In front of the back four, in a defensive midfield role, I'd slot in new signing Adam Griffiths. Fresh from his Saudi Arabian experience, if he doesn't play well Viddie can always ... (I won't go there).

Across the middle of the park I'd play three - Reid on the right, Marcos Flores in the centre and (hesitantly) Pantelis on the left.

Up-front I'd pair Dodd up with Owusu (unless the club signs Fowler, which may be on the cards - we can guarantee you no wooden splinters Robbie).

On the bench it would be Birighitti, Jamieson, Leckie (for use as an impact player) and Fyfe.

It's a pretty strong team - and I've had to leave out players such as Barbiero, Sarkies, Marrone, Cornthwaite, Hughes, Shin and Monterosso.

The ACL can't come quickly enough. It's a chance for redemption. It's a chance to once again show that the club is the real deal.
