So there we have it. When referee Kovalenko Valentin blew his whistle to end Melbourne Victory's clash against Jeju United it not only brought to an end our season but it also brought an end to the illustrious career of Kevin Muscat. It also left me wondering whom the haters were going to hate from now on.

One hater who especially will be now struggling for words to write will be the author of the Half-Time Orange blog over at The World Game, Jesse Fink, who has made it a habit of taking a cheap shot at the Victory's inaugural captain whenever the opportunity arose. Come to think of it, now that Muscat has retired and Nicky Carle has a limited chance of making it into the Socceroos all that's left to write about is his old mate Frank Lowy and those Australian players of dual heritage that flirt with other countries.

In one of his recent efforts, written just before Muscat's last match on home soil, he even has the temerity to list his recent rants about Muscat as a "presidential library of columns". More of the George W. Bush ilk rather than let's say Barack Obama one would think.

I wonder also what will happen to all those YouTube chestnuts that Fink has so obviously favourited highlighting all Muscat's supposed misdemeanours. What use will they be now? Maybe during those times when writer's block strikes, they'll be a reminder of better times when a Muscat-bashing piece could come so easily.

And what about Fink's old friend hyperbole? Where will that sit in any of his future writings? They will sit all alone on the shelf unused alongside the likes of "tormented an African", "a lout and a blight on the game", "got torn a new one by karma" and "nearly snapped a young man in two". I can hope only hope that shelf is big enough.

Kevin Muscat, love or loathe him, has contributed a lot more to the footballing landscape in this country both on and off the field than Jesse Fink and his pithy comments will ever do. Fink in the latest piece on Muscat writes: "Too often his instincts were to intimidate, lash out, hack down, harass, argue, bully". How is that any different from continuingly taking cheap shots from the blogosphere? Oh wait . . .

As the Beatles once said, "Let It Be".
