So maybe we haven't been getting more than five thousand people through the gates at Skilled Park. Maybe we aren't promoting the club right. Maybe the owner of our club is a complete tool when it comes to running our club. But through all the negatives that have happened at United, I am confident that ‘The Beach' have come out stronger than ever.
Every match, despite the crap that goes on off the field, we try our best to support the eleven men on the field that make going to games enjoyable. Of course it was hard going through the goal drought that has brought us a very unwanted record, but the feeling of joy and ecstasy when John Curtis scored an absolute stunner against the Jets was magnificent.
And then when we put three past Wellington, recording our first ever victory over the New Zealand side, that too brought an amazing feeling to us fans.
I could sit here for thousands of words talking about the negatives at the club at the current point of time. But instead, I'd rather talk positively about the club at the moment.
So what have I noticed from the past few games that makes me and fellow United fans proud?
1. The team itself - finally we seem to be gelling as a unit this year. Passing the ball beyond once or twice in a move and creating many goal scoring opportunities.
2. Bruce Djite - normally I don't single players out in performances, but Brucey has been brilliant so far for us. Despite a slow start to his United career, it seems he is hitting top form, and could soon show that he will be better for us than Shane Smeltz ever was.
3. The Beach - as I said before, we try our best to make the games enjoyable and support the team. Every match we seem to grow stronger, perhaps not in numbers, but in passion, noise and co-ordination. For a supporter's club in only it's second year, we've made some giant strides for such a small group.
Perhaps it's true when they say that whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger. Despite the dramas away from the beautiful game, the fans that do turn up and not shamefully boycott the games have grown stronger and louder every game this season.
There's still a long way to go until the end of the season, by my count 10 home games. That's 900 minutes of football that the Beach will be singing loud and proud for Gold Coast United. We'll be there trying to strengthen the active support at Skilled Park, and hopefully helping the yellow team on the field play even better than they have been recently.
As the time counts down to the kick-off of what is our biggest home match so far this season, there is a new wave of optimism flushing through the Gold Coast United forum. At the start of the season, especially after our dismal performances against Brisbane and Melbourne Victory, I don't think anyone would honestly believe that we could beat Adelaide. But now that is not the case.
A good performance against the Jets (who I am extremely happy were saved, the A-League wouldn't have been the same without them) and a brilliant performance against the Phoenix has shown the fans that we are one of the best teams in the league, and we will be there or there-abouts come the end of the season.
They say the darkest hour comes before the dawn, perhaps the off-field dramas at Gold Coast United have led to the bright times of success on the field.
Gold Coast United 'til I die.
