The newest MLS side ready themselves for next season
MLS expansion side FC Cincinnati has unveiled their club crest and colours ahead of their first season as a Major League Soccer franchise.
Amongst a wave of expansion teams joining the top-flight competition of the United States in recent years, ‘FC Cincy’ hosted a packed-out event and introduced the fans and wider football public to its ‘MLS brand’.
Formerly plying their trade in the United Soccer League, the Ohio-state-based franchise has carried over their traditional orange and blue colours for their new crest.
The Orange and Blue’s crest has maintained the same winged lion as their USL predecessors, while the lion’s seven-pointed mane is a tribute to the seven hills of Cincinnati.
More subtle features of the crest which recognise the club’s short history include a 3-feathered wing, one for each season of play in the USL prior to their MLS debut.
Despite not having yet signed any players for their inaugural MLS squad, the latest expansion team will hope to achieve similar commercial and on-field success as their recent expansion counterparts.
Atlanta United has been particularly successful since joining the league in 2017 and now face the New York Red Bulls for a place in the upcoming 2018 MLS Cup Final.
Joining in 2019, FC Cincinnati will precede further expansion in 2020.
David Beckham’s Inter Miami CF has been in the works for almost a decade, while the confirmed Nashville-based expansion side are yet to unveil their club identity.
