Russia defeated one of the tournament’s favorites Spain 4-3 on penalties after the teams were level at 1-1 after extra time.

According to FIFA, this was the highest rated World Cup broadcast in Russia since the game with Japan at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and the highest rated broadcast in general, since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s New Year speech in December 2017.

Russia have advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union and will face Croatia in the game on Saturday.
