Almost 67,000 people attended the 2018 FIFA World Cup fan fest in the Russian city of St. Petersburg on its opening day, the organizers' press service said Friday.
The maximum load of the fan zone, which is located at Konyushennaya Square in the city center, amounted to about 12,500 people and was registered during the broadcast of the FIFA World Cup opening match that ended in a Russia's 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia late on Thursday.
During the maximum load period, all the entrance checkpoints were closed from 6:20 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. local time (15:20 until 17:00 GMT).
The 2018 FIFA World Cup will last till July 15, with the games set to be played at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities. The 67,000-seater St. Petersburg Stadium will host four group stage matches, a round of 16 game, a semi-final and the third place match.
