KAZAN, July 5 (Sputnik) - Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez said on Thursday that the video assistant referee (VAR) system that had been launched at the FIFA World Cup in Russia was beneficial for football.
"It [VAR] has been a real benefit to the game. You don't want to see that sort of behavior on the pitch, we all understand that this is a sport of contact, there's a very big difference when you are wrestling with a player and stopping a player trying to score a goal, so I think now we have got a real help toward a referee and that sort of behavior in the box is gonna be punished. You need to be a little bit more clever with your marking, be very careful with a contact. Now you gonna be checked in every single marking situation in the box. I think that's a real advantage of VAR, " Martinez told journalists.
Belgium will face five-time World Cup winners Brazil in their quarter-final match in Kazan on Friday.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia.
