“Thank you for the positive emotions and for putting up a good fight” was the general reaction from Belgium’s politicians and media after head coach Roberto Martinez’s team were knocked out of the World Cup after losing their semi-final clash with France.
France beat neighbors Belgium 1-0 in St. Petersburg on Tuesday to reach the World Cup final, where they will face either Croatia or England. France defender Samuel Umtiti scored the winning goal in the 51st minute.
“Bravo Red Devils for your performances and to have us shiver until [the] 1/2 final!” Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel wrote on his official Twitter page.
“Many thanks, Belgium!” Foreign Affairs Minister Didier Reynders said via his official Twitter account.
“Proud of our guys and the team! You put up a good fight! Well played!” the Belgian Royal Palace posted on their Twitter account.
Belgium newspapers DH.be and Le Soir also thanked the team for their “positive emotions” and “making it all the way to the semi-finals.”
