"The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has been notified of the appeal and urgent request for a stay filed by the Peruvian football player Paolo Guerrero at the Swiss Federal Tribunal (SFT)... The CAS will not object to the request for a stay,” CAS said in a statement published on its official website.

In December 2017, FIFA banned Guerrero for one year for failing a doping test with the FIFA Appeal Committee later reducing the sanction to six months.

The footballer and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) both later appealed to CAS with Guerrero hoping for the ban to be fully lifted and WADA asking for the penalty to be extended. CAS agreed to extend the ban to 14 months, meaning Guerrero would only be able to return to the pitch in 2019.

Earlier in May, the captains of Peru’s World Cup group rivals, France, Denmark and Australia, asked FIFA to allow Peru's all-time top goalscorer to play at the World Cup.

The 34-year-old have netted 33 goals in 87 matches for Peru since his international debut in 2004.

Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup will take place from June 14 to July 15 in 11 host cities. Peru will face France, Denmark and Australia in Group C.
