Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov said on Friday that playing in top European leagues was not a "cure-all" for Russia footballers and that it mattered more how they played rather than where they did it.
Villarreal midfielder Denis Cheryshev and Brugge goalkeeper Vladimir Gabulov are the only two members of the current Russia squad, who play their football outside the Russian Premier League.
"The important thing is not where they play, but at what level. It's clear that if the guys are playing in the European leagues that are better than the Russian one, it will be helpful. But as we can see it's not a cure-all," Cherchesov told journalists.
The hosts, who knocked out 2010 World Cup winners Spain from this summer's tournament in the round of 16, will next face Croatia in Sochi on Saturday.
