Vice President of the Russian Football Union Sergey Anokhin told Sputnik on Saturday that Cherchesov should continue training the Russian national football team after the 2018 FIFA World Cup .
Hosts Russia were eliminated from the tournament, as Croatia beat them on penalties in Sochi on Saturday to advance to the World Cup semi-finals, where they will face England on Wednesday. The match finished 2-2 after extra time.
"I'm upset with the result of the quarter-final match, but I'm proud of the team's performance at the World Cup. Thank you to the players, the coaching staff, [head coach Stanislav] Cherchesov in particular. The guys have reminded us that there was football in Russia, as there were some talks that Russia was a 'non-football' country. We are a football country. Should Cherchesov stay? I think he should," Anokhin said.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the final set to be held at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
