Villarreal and Russia midfielder Denis Cheryshev said on Saturday that he "was not upset" at Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo taking his lead in the scoring rankings.
"No, I was not upset. Not a bit," Cheryshev told journalists.
Cheryshev scored a double as Russia beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the World Cup opening match in Moscow on Thursday, while Ronaldo scored a hat-trick helping Portugal draw 3-3 with Spain on Friday, and becoming the leading scorer at this World Cup.
Cheryshev added that he was happy for Spain defender Nacho, who scored the third goal for Spain during that match. Cheryshev and Nacho used to be teammates at Real Madrid youth team.
"I liked the match a lot. I'm happy for Nacho. The most important thing is that our teams, Russia and Spain, achieved a good result," Cheryshev added.
The games of the 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities till July 15.
