Spain forward Diego Costa said on Friday that former head coach Julen Lopetegui's sacking was unexpected but now the national team is united.
Lopetegui was replaced by Spain's sporting director Fernando Hierro after agreeing to take charge of managerless Real Madrid after the World Cup without notifying the Royal Spanish Football Federation that he was in talks with the club.
“It was a shock that Lopetegui left his position and it was not pleasant. However life goes on and the team is united now,” Costa said.
Spain and Portugal played out an epic 3-3 draw at Sochi's Fisht Stadium on Friday, with Costa recording a brace for Spain.
"For me the match was good, we had to score and I did so twice. Every game is important at the World Cup and this encounter was no exception. It is good that we scored three times but no so good that we didn't manage to win," Costa added.
Spain and Portugal were both drawn in Group B alongside Morocco and Iran.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup will last till July 15, with the games set to be played at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities.
