Forward Johan Venegas opened the scoring in the 30th minute, Joel Campbell doubled his side's lead one minute in the second half before defender Francisco Calvo sealed Costa Rica's victory in the 66th minute.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held between June 14 and July 15 at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities.

Costa Rica will play Serbia, Brazil and Switzerland in Group E while Northern Ireland failed to qualify for the upcoming tournament.
