Russia have been criticized in the media for failing to win any of their last seven friendlies ahead of the World Cup, which will kick off in Moscow later on Thursday.

"Despite all the mockery, ironic statements about the Russian squad, I believe in the team and will support them," Karyakin said.

The 2017 Dakar Rally champion added that he would attend two World Cup matches and would watch the opening game at the fan zone in his hometown of Yekaterinburg.

"I know from personal experience that it is impossible to always win. Let's see what shape our team will have at this tournament," Karyakin said.

Russia will host its first FIFA World Cup from June 14 to July 15. The fixtures will be played at 12 stadiums across 11 cities.
