England are ready for the possibility of either extra time or a penalty shoot-out in their round of 16 match against Colombia, head coach Gareth Southgate said on Thursday.
England finished second in Group G after losing 1-0 to Belgium on Thursday and will face Colombia in the round of 16 match on Tuesday.
“In terms of penalties, we’ve been practicing and going over strategies for them since March. It would have been too late to start that now, three days away from the game. We’re aware that the margins are going to be really fine in these knockout phases, and we’ve got to be prepared physically to go to extra time, if needed, mentally, and to go beyond that, if that’s what it takes,” Southgate told journalists.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia.
