Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen said on Thursday that, after the two games his team has played at the FIFA World Cup in Russia, he was not very happy with the video assistant referee (VAR) system.
Eriksen was named the man of the match after netting his side's only goal in their 1-1 draw with Australia at the Samara Arena on Thursday. Australia leveled matters in the 38th minute after a penalty was awarded following consultations with VAR.
“I think I am not very happy with the VAR after today. This is the second time it has worked against us. We should have received a free-kick right before that moment. Maybe VAR should be used for free-kicks, too? We expected the game to be very difficult. We started well, scored in the first ten minutes. But then the game had changed, we had to defend. I think Australia... are a very strong team,” Eriksen told journalists.
The tournament in Russia is the first World Cup where VAR is used to help match officials avoid possible mistakes by reviewing video replays of game episodes.
