The US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) expanded their Moscow office for the duration of the FIFA World Cup to provide support and assistance to their Russian colleagues, FBI Assistant Director of the International Operations Division George Piro said on Wednesday.
“In regards to our cooperation with our Russian counterparts, we actually do have an office in Moscow, we have personnel assigned there… We actually expanded our office for the period during the World Cup, just so we are in a better position to support and assist our counterparts, so we are able to provide the kind of assistance that our counterparts would want or seek from us,” Piro said.
He added that the FBI’s mission is to “protect the US citizens that is not limited to the United States” but in a “global sense” as well, and a large part of the World Cup ticket were bought by US nationals.
“We have been working very closely, sharing intelligence and information with the folks in Moscow, working with our counterparts leading up and during the FIFA World Cup… So that they are able to address any potential threats to the events, to the venues and things like that,” Piro said.
